Inspired by his wife’s transition into pharmacy and the learning opportunities she received, Daniel Berry applied to Boots UK just under two years ago. “I thought now’s the time and the opportunity for me to perhaps look at a career path and I wanted to get the qualification behind me,” he explains. “In pharmacy, there’s always a chance of developing yourself that little bit further all the time. That’s something I want to do.”

Such desire to improve himself comes across clearly in his work. “Dan goes above and beyond every day in work life and at home,” wrote his nominator Sam Beauley, dispensing store manager. “He is a very friendly, bubbly and caring young man who will do anything in his power to help anyone. Every day he comes to work with a smile on his face which lights up the pharmacy.”

A commitment to his training also ensured that Dan was able to make a potentially life-saving intervention when a patient came in for his blood pressure medication having previously bought aspirin. “I thought, something doesn’t sit quite right there,” says Dan. “I checked it with the pharmacist, and she informed me that if that patient were to take the aspirin with the blood pressure medication, it could raise their blood pressure through the roof.”

The judges were especially impressed with the way Daniel takes the time to apply his learning to patient care. “Daniel is clearly committed to providing the best care possible to his customers,” says Claire Steele, APTUK president and RoE judge. “It shows a strength of character to put others first; Daniel’s care and compassion was absolutely evident in his nomination.”
